Welcome to the PRISON PUPS AND PALS.org Web site. My goal is to provide you with useful information about a “Shelter Pet Adoption Project and the Inmate Career Training Initiative©”.
Place: Tomoka Correctional Institution, Daytona Beach, FL
Late 2009 brought three companies together, the West Volusia Kennel Club, West Volusia Humane Society and WE Help Animals to form a core group to organize, publicize, obtain supplies and instruct Inmates in learning a trade in a 17 billion dollar industry: “Pets” and getting shelter dogs a home. 2010 brought dogs from the West Volusia Humane Society in Deland for a seven week “Training Camp” like atmosphere. Living with the inmates, not in outside dog houses or kennel runs as some facilities have nationwide. This allows the dogs to become “house & potty trained”, and get used to various different people, atmosphere and ambient noise. The men have personal responsibility for the care and well being of their dog. See other stories on this within this site.
January 3, 2011 begins the 2nd year of the project and it brings a new shelter partner into the Tomoka C.I. Program. The shelter is Halifax Humane Society, from Daytona Beach, Halifax H.S. brings with them a complete package: Dogs, groomers, supplies, veterinarians, public relations, etc. They are 501c3 tax deductible, their website is www.halifaxhumanesociety.org
West Volusia Kennel Club’s function is to provide instructors to teach Tomoka Inmates to become “Basic Dog Obedience” Trainers. They are a 501 c4 Organization which is not tax deductible. Eventually, the Tomoka C.I. basic dog obedience training project will be self sufficient and the West Volusia Kennel Club would have done their job! One day soon the Inmates will be teaching other Inmates.
PRISON PUPS AND PALS 2010’s initial set up cost of supplies were greatly defrayed by 501(C) (3) tax deductible donations through the West Volusia Humane Society*. Their web site has a “DONATE PAGE” featuring PAY PAL. IT IS: WWW.WVHUMANESOCIETY.COM . Donors that wanted a public thank are listed on my “Thank You” page
Tax deductible donations received at this time (post 12/03/10) will care for the four unadopted dogs from 2010 classes 001-003. They are “Play with me” Bing, “sweet” Brianna, “lovable” Smiley and “huggable” Psycho aka Priscilla.
*See the “Legal” page on our site for Florida solicitation license information.
Remember, in Florida, always ask to see the Solicitation License of the person or company asking for donations! It is the law to have a solicitation license regardless of the cause.
Feel free to browse around this site. If you have comments or questions about any inmate dog training project, their pet adoptions or simply need more information, click on the contact button on any page within this site. Plus, let me know if there needs to be any corrections done. I am far from perfect.
I hope to be able to let you know the upkeep costs for each dog for each class at Tomoka that was held in 2010. Including preparation prior to entry and after the graduation while staying at the shelter. How much food is consumed, approximate quantity of everyday supplies and monthly (flea control & heartworm medication) supplies. In other words, what it took to support a dog in each seven week program. Thank you, West Volusia Kennel Club for supplying the receipts to do this list.
Tomoka kept an approximate inventory and I thank Officer Welling for that list. Officer Welling mentioned that regular cloth towels and blankets were not to be used anymore, only paper towels.
I am adding other Inmate/shelter dog training programs. This will include many different types of training from companion animal to service dogs. There are training programs that include search & rescue. But, remember, always check the Correctional Institution if you want to get involved.
Thanks for visiting and I look forward to keeping you informed about the inmate trained Dogs and the adoption quest.
Thank you,
Karen K Clark
